Preamble:The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3. The observance of the Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of person with disabilities
Objective:To motivate the specially abled persons and give them equal opportunities. . .

Summary:
MGM Department of Prosthetics & Orthotics in association with MGM Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and MGM School of Physiotherapy organized the ‘International Day of Person with Disabilities 2021’ on 3rd December 2021. This year the theme was ‘Leadership and participation of persons with Disabilities towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID 19 world.’
The event started with lamp lightning and inauguration of program in presence of all dignitaries, organizers and amputee patients by MGM Institute’s University Department of Prosthesis and Orthotics, MGM Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and MGM School of Physiotherapy, It was followed by walkathon activity for people with amputation. Post walkathon, the event was continued at the 2nd floor auditorium in MGM hospital.
Introduction to the day of persons with disabilities was started with a welcome speech and felicitation of guest by Dr. Richa from PMR department. It was followed with a lecture on ‘Introduction of Physical Medicine and rehabilitation’ by Dr. Anil Khandekar (Prof. and HOD, PMR department). This was followed by a guest on lecture on ‘Stroke: a cause of disability, motor recovery in stroke’ was delivered by Dr. Vinay Goyal (Associate Prof, AIIPMR). A lecture on ‘Rehabilitation after stroke’ was conducted by Dr. Manisha Shambharkar (Sr. Resident, PMR department). Dr. Richa also conducted a short quiz in between the sessions in order to engage the participants. This was followed by a session on ‘Rehabilitation after Amputation” by Dr. Rucha Pradhan (PT, Assistant Professor Physiotherapy, MGMSOPNM).
A small skit was performed by physiotherapy students on ‘Leadership and participation of persons with Disabilities towards an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID 19 world.’ An eye opener skit was portrayed by Interns and MPTs of MGM School of Physiotherapy. The skit highlighted on visual, audio, mental and physical disability. The obstacles faced by them in everyday activities were displayed through the skit. Society's perception and ability to change it was beautifully presented with the theme of 'Inclusiveness and Accessibility'. The use of life sized props made the play even more attractive. The takeaway message was indeed something to reflect upon.
This was followed by a lecture on ‘Government schemes for disabled person and awareness about the disability certificates’ by Dr. Uttara Deshmukh (HOD, Prosthetics and orthotics) and a guest lecture on ‘Stress Management’ by Dr. Swapnil Bhopi (Clinical Psychologist, MGM Medical college Navi Mumbai.
The event continued with a fancy dress competition for children with Cerebral Palsy and CTEV. This was followed by singing performances by these patients.
All participants were awarded by trophies, gifts and certificates. The guest speaker was awarded by Khadi Shawl which is specially manufactured by MGM and a coconut along with a green plant and certificate. Rest of all speakers were awarded with only green plants and certificates.
The session was concluded by A vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Pratiksha Shelar (Faculty from MGMIUDPO).
The event ended with special lunch for all the participants.
